Fitzroy North
3068 is a joyful collaboration between friends to bring light and amenity to an existing Victorian terrace house. The client's brief included a desire for sustainable design and flexible living spaces for their growing family.
The design response involved removing the existing lean-to and bringing a sense of rhythm and light to the house. The generously proportioned rooms of the existing heritage house are retained and restored complimented by a new double storey extension to the rear. The extension includes a gable-roofed living space overlooking the garden with the kitchen, living and dining spaces as well as a bedroom suite above. Through the use of floor and ceiling level changes there is a sense of each room having a distinct quality, each with its own natural light source and aspect. The high interior gable of the living space is flooded with natural light and is the culmination of a procession from the street to backyard that gives the effect of an unexpected delight in its generosity.
The interiors layer timber, colour and textures that result in a warm materiality, creating a welcoming home that reflects the client’s personalities. This is a playful and robust house designed to be lived in, accommodating domestic rituals from raising children to inviting friends around for dinner.
